Yeah, these are some of Japan's finest superheros - the guy with toast for a head, a curry bread man and best of all - the SWEET BREAD MAN!!! His head is a bun with sweet bean paste inside. His weakness is water or anything that makes his head dirty. The villain is Baikinman or "Germ Man" whose weakness is soap and wants to turn the world into Germ World. Kids watch these cartoons all day and they are a real hit in Japan. So, Ethan (the boy I tutor in Japanese) had a birthday on Friday. I made him an Anpanman cake. I think he was pretty excited about it.
PS - my favorite is actually melonpanna chan. She is so cute. And I LOVE MELON PAN!!! Has anyone eaten it? Oh yum. Here's a picture that she is in. She is the one with the yellow head and green clothes

Oh, Kate, hugs are SO WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! I can TOTALLY understand your excitement!!! Also, I LOVE THAT CAKE!!! That is, talent, girl! I hope you had a Happy Easter!
Love,
Hol
Katie, I'm so glad you posted this, because I couldn't picture it when you told me about it. You are such an awesome teacher! Cole saw it and immediately said, "Anpanman!!!" With perfect accent, because that's the only way he's heard it said. And way to post one second before coming over to our house for the Easter dinner you bought and we cooked.
Where did you get those wicked cake-decorating skills? Add that to your bad old Japanese-speaking skills and you are one wicked bad chick.
What a sweet teacher you are! In more ways than one. I love that the cartoon characters are inspired by food. All super heroes should be edible.
Now you're officially one of the coolest people you know. Can you teach anybody Japanese and/or cake decorating?
Katie!!! You amaze me! Wow. What a lucky little guy. I totally love the cake! And you look FABULOSO by the way. Miss you!
MMMmmm... Melon Pan! Got any idea if you can get that anywhere in the States? I wish I had a chance to keep up on my Japanese. It's pretty kusai.
I had a bun once in Japan with ham baked in the middle. Do they have a super hero for that? It was so good. Because we didn't speak Japanese, we never really knew for sure what we were getting when we bought stuff. I always hated when I got sweet bean paste by mistake. Or turtle eggs that looked like dumplings. Yummo. I do sorely miss the fried octopus though...Eating there is a real adventure!
Yum. I want sweetbread. Very cute cake you made.
can you make me the one with the R on it? That superhero was modeled after me you know. She's got lots of powers and numchuck skills and stuff. And she's magic. Just like me.
Of course I've eaten it...and I LOVE IT! I just had like 20 last month when I was in Japan! I love Japanese bread. We need to go there together again!
So, do you want to hear our plan?
Our plan is to be pretty rich by 2011 and go to Japan. We want to start in Okinawa, then to Tokyo (visit our mish mish!)then go up to my hometown. Sound fun? You and Joey should come with us! If you don't think you can afford it, don't worry, like I said, our plan is to be pretty rich by then.
